Beer Pong rules can be divided into two categories. Those two categories are general rules and controversial rules. This article will focus on the general rules while providing a brief overview of the controversial rules and conclude with a reference for further research.
Before diving into the general Beer Pong rules we need to briefly cover the items needed and the setup for game play.
Items needed:
* 4 people (2-on-2)
* 2 ping pong balls
* 4 to 6 beers/game (2 or 3 beers/side/game)
* A flat playing surface roughly the size of a ping pong table.
* 20 cups (10 cups per side)
Setup:
* Teams of two are positioned across the table from each other
* Both sides arrange ten cups in front of them in a pyramid formation
* The cups are partially filled with beer - usually 4 ounces of beer/cup
Having now covered the few items needed and the basic setup it is time to move on to the general rules.
General Beer Pong Rules:
The object of the game is simple: eliminate all of your opponents' cups before they eliminate all of yours.
Teams of two alternate taking turns eliminating their opponents' cups by tossing ping pong balls across the table in an attempt to land the ping pong balls in the opposition's cups. Successfully landing a ping pong ball in one of the opposing team's cups results in that cup being eliminated. When a cup is eliminated the beer inside the cup is drank.
Teams take turns tossing or "shooting" at the opposing side's cups until all of the cups on one side of the table of have been eliminated.
This concludes the general Beer Pong rules.
In the next section of this article you will be exposed to list of controversial rules. Although the following list is not exhaustive it is representative of the majority of the rule discrepancies that arise.
Controversial Beer Pong Rules:
* blocking an opponents toss
* blowing on a ball on the rim of a cup
* both players from the same team making shots on the same turn
* bouncing a shot in
* determining which team shoots first
* distracting the opponents
* leaning over the table while shooting
* racking the cups after made shots
* rules for overtime

Thanks for checking out my article to the point that I was asked to do one more this week. Just like the general public to cause more work for me. I'm just kidding... but seriously. Haha. Yeah I'm not really that funny at all.
So back to business, this week I would like to discuss one thing that has been bothering me for a while. As you know, I am a college student and, as one, I know what Beer pong is. But what I want to know is do I really? The answer, surprisingly to many, is no. Most college students have actually never played Beer pong in their lives. They have, however, played Beirut on several occasions.
What modern college kids are calling Beer pong is in actuality called Beirut. Beirut is 6 or 10 cups in a triangle on a table while teams on one or 2 try to throw ping-pong balls into their opponent's cups. (For more details, look on out games page. It's still under Beer pong.) Now we get to some real Beer pong.
OK, so the game of beer pong is, in fact, very similar to Beirut but at the same time, quite different. The table is the same, preferably a ping-pong table. And the balls, cups, and beer are the same. The only real difference is that there are more 10 cups per side and instead of throwing the balls; you actually hit them with a paddle. I find it to be a lot more fun. This does bring up a new topic though.
If the college scene, being that is, was, or going to be most of America, calls Beirut Beer pong, should we just switch them. Beirut will be called Beer pong and visa versa. This will solve the problem, right? I personally don't think so. While people who were calling it the wrong name get to still call it that name the people who know it as Beirut lose out.
Pretty much it's your decision. If you haven't tried playing actual Beer pong, I would seriously suggest it. It’s loads of fun (much like your mom) and you end up getting really drunk (hence, why I know your mom is loads of fun). So try your hand and tell me what you think.
