Having players go to the plate and have quality at-bats and productive outs are the keys to offensive success in baseball. We do not like wasted outs. In youth baseball, you team is allowed only to get 18 or 21 depending on your leagues rules.

The last thing we want to see as coaches is "wasted" outs that achieve absolutely nothing for your team. We want every at-bat to be productive. However, the situation a batter is batting in always determines how we perceive an at-bat and the results at the plate.

I want to give insight in how youth coaches should evaluate an at-bat to be good or bad, productive or nonproductive.

What is considered a productive at-bat?

Many times we as coaches consider productive if the batter accomplishes one or two things while batting. Many times we are happy with the effort of a batter if the batter does one of two things; 1) Batter gets a base hit. 2) Batter makes a productive out.

We may also consider another kind of at-bat productive if in the early innings and you are facing a overpowering pitcher. That at-bat is one in which your batter takes the count deep forcing the pitchers pitch count to rise drastically. His at-bat also allows your other batters to study and see the pitcher's "stuff" at a crucial time in the game.

What is considered a productive out?

A Productive Out in baseball is when a batter hits a fly ball, a grounder or a bunt that advances a runner. The out is considered most productive when there are no outs or when the grounder or fly ball scores a run with one out.

There are several points we must remember when we consider the productiveness of an out:

1. Did the batter drive a run in or score a run as a result of the out being made?

2. Did the batter make an out to advance one of more runners into scoring position?

Coaching Point: The score, inning, and the player at bat can also have a reflection on whether we consider an out productive or not.

What we may consider a productive out in one situation may not be considered a productive out in another situation. For example, when you are up by one run in the bottom of the second inning you are not really looking for a productive out when you have certain batters at the plate.

When you have bases loaded and you have your most productive power batter at the plate, the last thing you expect or want him to do is to hit a lazy fly ball to the left fielder to get a sacrifice fly. You do not consider that a productive out. You would consider a productive

On the other hand, if the score is tied in the 6th inning, you would be very happy to have that same batter hit a fly ball to sac a run in, provided that you have confidence in your pitcher and defense to protect the lead and preserve the win.

If you are a little insecure about your pitching and defense, you want the batter to not get a productive out, but to drive a triple into the left center fielder gap to score two or more runs to give you and your team a little more "breathing room" on defense.

In any case, we must rely on kids to perform under pressure to give your team a chance to win. For more articles on this subject visit the YouthBaseballDigest.com or BaseballCoachingDigest.com websites for baseball coaches.

Good luck to you and your team. Thanks for reading this article. Have a great day, Nick.

my wifes boss pushed her....legal action sould be taken??

last night my wife told me that her boss had pushed her out of the way...while she was on the clocks. Not real hard but a drink was dropped by her .she is a bartender at a club. and he did do this out of anger. she has no marks or was not hurt but was upset by this but is fear full of loosing her income if she dose any thing about it...but he did send her a text message says " im sorry that I pushed u hard I had a bad night" so there is proof that he did this and that he knew that he had done something wrong...what kind of of legal action should be taken??? what do we do about this abuse more that just calling the cops...should we talk to a lawyer ? is there any kind of case we can bring against him??? because im trying real hard not to go down there and take a base ball bat to his face witch will then put me in the bad but it will be worth it if there’s nothing else that can be done!

AS soon as you start any action I would think your wife would lose her job.
Going to thump somebody will not help.
Taking legal action needs a solicitor first so I would suggest you called the CAB who will give you a half hour with a solicitor free to discuss the matter to see if it is worth while.
If she was not hurt and has no marks on her I would think it is not worth pursuing.

The Tale of a Little Leaguer Trying Out for the Big Leagues
It is every young boy’s dream to become a professional athlete when he gets older. For me, it was baseball. Baseball wasn’t merely a game or a sport that I idolized; it was a lifestyle and passion. My every thought, action, and breath involved the innocent bliss that baseball offered. I loved the sound of the bat connecting with the ball, the smell of the freshly cut grass, and the feel of ...
