Being based in Brazil many of my friends and family ask me "what's Christmas like in Brazil"?

In the main,Christmas in Brazil, follows the European traditions, particularly, those of Portugal. It is essentially a time when families get together most notably for Christmas supper, which is eaten at Midnight on December 24th. Although, lots of families eat earlier than this the big difference to European and North American tradition is this is eaten on Christmas Eve, as opposed to Christmas Day.

The Christmas Supper will consist of turkey, chicken, pork, ham, rice, fresh vegetables and fruit dishes. However, poorer Brazilians, usually have to make-do with rice and chicken. Traditional Catholic families may attend Mass at Midnight (on the 24th), the Mass ends at 1.00am, and is known as The Rooster Mass or Missa do Galo.

TRADITIONS OF CHRISTMAS

One of the main traditions is the nativity scene or Presepio.

The Presepio was introduced in the 17th century by a Franciscan friar named; Gaspar de Santo Agostinho. Most interestingly, he was from Olinda, which is also considered the birthplace of Brazilian nationality. Father Christmas, or; Papai Noel is the unsuprisingly, traditional gift bringer, originally hailing from Greenland (according to legend).

The Papai Noel concept came to Brazil during the 1950s, originating from The United States and was subsequently in the 60s and 70s commercialised as the Christmas gift bringer. The decorated Christmas tree is an important Christmas ingredient, as are coloured , flashing electric lights, both adorn the main living room of houses and apartments, with the flashing lights being particularly popular draped across and over balconies of the many millions of apartment buildings in Brazil.

Fireworks can be heard all hours of the day and night (mostly at night, and sometimes all through the night), and this typically Brazilian, pyrotechnic dimension to festivities, will continue until January 6th, otherwise known as Three Kings Day, which symbolizes the Three Wise Men , taking gifts to The Baby Jesus.

May you find joy, peace and contentment, and I sincerely hope that 2008 will be a memorable, and very special year for you. if you would like to have a meaningful Christmas this year, why not take a volunteer program in Brazil over the festive period? You can get more information here; Volunteering Abroad at Christmas.

I do hope you found this article useful and interesting if you would like to embark upon a meaningful travel program abroad, most particularly in Brazil. Please feel free to check-out http://www.volunteerbrazil.com/

What Is a Pousada?

Pousadas can be found by the hundreds in Brazil. Especially close to water. Close to water means close to beaches, waterfalls, or the famous Pantanal, which is a swampy area where many scary aligators are waiting to entertain the tourists.

You may wonder why they can be found especially in Brazil. The fact is that there are also many to be found in Portugal and it wouldn't be surprising that you can also find some in some other countries, especially in Africa. What do all these countries have in common?... Exactly, they all are portuguese speaking countries. The word pousada means nothing more than a family run hotel,.... you can also call it a house hotel, or if I am not mistaken, the english word is "inn".

A building too big to be a normal house, or you can say it used to be a really big house, and at the same time,.. too small to be a hotel building. That is what you need to have a pousada. Generally a family runs it, though this does not always mean this family owns the pousada. In some cases a pousada is a bunch of very small houses on a piece of land. Small houses means: So small you can't live in it. Its more like a bungalow tent or a permanent caravan made of stone. But for vacation purposes one of the best ways to spend your free time.

Talking about bungalow tents and permanent caravans (note, these are a lot smaller than a trailer),... The advantage of a pousada is that you can go to another one every weekend. There´s not obligation to every weekend go to the same old location where you know all your neighbor because they too never go anywhere else. I guess many people like "same old, same old" more than "something new"

Beaches, if you love the beach, then a pousada at the beach is great. And this may be surprising, there is no such thing as a private beach in Brazil, so you never have to worry about only being able to look at the beach. All beaches are accessable for everybody. That doesn't mean all beaches are reachable though. But you can be sure that close to those beaches, you won't find many pousadas.

Waterfalls,.. Some pousadas are placed close to waterfalls. And waterfalls can be found by the hundreds in Brazil. For example the island in front of the coast of the state of São Paulo, named Ilhabella (beautiful island) is maybe 30 by 40 miles big, but you can find over 300 waterfalls on this small island. It is over 2000 feet high so it is not strange that there are some waterfalls of upto 250 feet high.

The Pantanal is a famous area in Brazil of which you can find a lot more information by searching in Google. It´s too much to write about in detail in this article. But if you like the outdoor life, you should consider visiting this part of Brazil. Featured in programs on various channels like the Discovery Channel, the pantanal has many pousadas as home bases to discover the wild life in the Pantanal.

Pousadas are the best places to stay when visiting Brazil, but it is not recommendable to go to these places without knowing the country. English is not commonly spoken, so you either need to speak (brazilian) portuguese or have a trustable guide to help you find your way.

If the World Cup is the globe's biggest party, consider this year's edition Y2K, powered by a supertanker of Red Bull. A record four South American teams -- Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay and Paraguay -- are in the final eight. All have devout South Florida followings, including massive colonies of Argentines and Brazilians.
