Growing onions
It is unlikely that the first shipment of onion seeds taken from England to Australia could have been successful because onion cultivars have to be carefully matched to their growing conditions. Those that grow well in Noll h America, Europe and Asia are known as long-day cultivars, whereas short-day cultivars are required for most of Australia, southernmost areas requiring intermediate-day cultivars.
