Court Signs Player

Learning How To Play Basketball Defense properly helps teams win championships. I'm sure everyone has heard the saying, "Defense wins championships". That's a very common statement when describing the most successful teams in basketball - at all levels of play.

As many times as we've heard that said and actually proven on the court, most players and coaches still don't make defense a top priority when developing their game. Why is that?

Well to start, learning how to play basketball defense is hard work! Sadly enough, most players and coaches aren't willing to put in the time and effort needed to become successful on the defensive end of the court. The other reason most players and coaches aren't dedicated to improving their defensive game is that it isn't as fun as other aspects of the game.

Yes - shooting, dribbling, passing and the other aspects of offense are often more enjoyable to teach, learn and practice so that's where most players and coaches focus their time and effort. But in order to become complete and well-rounded in all aspects of the game, players and coaches must dedicate a portion of their time into learning how to play basketball defense. It's critical to their success!

The ten criteria I have listed below will help determine whether a player can be considered a complete defensive player. This is helpful for coaches and players alike. How so? Well, coaches can use these criteria to help develop their approach to the defensive game. They can use it as a foundation for success. Players can use this information to help them focus on the importance of becoming a defensive specialist! Again, they can use this as their foundation for success on the defensive end of the court!

In order to become a complete defensive player, you must:

1. Have quick hands and quick feet.

2. Be able to jump quickly and repetitively.

3. Have good instincts and react quickly to the action on the court.

4. Have a coach that is focused on and committed to improving individual and team defense.

5. Be able to play a variety of defenses - (Man-to-man, a variety of zones, half-court traps, full-court press, etc...).

6. Be able to make a quick transition from the offensive end of the floor to your defensive position.

7. Have a thorough understanding of the entire game and all of its concepts and strategies.

8. Communicate with your teammates on the defensive end of the court.

9. Be able to play both strong-side and weak-side defense equally as well.

10. Practice proper defensive stance, footwork and positioning.

NBA - Rajon Rondo Signs a $55M five year extension with the Boston Celtics

The Boston Celtics had until this Monday night to reach an agreement regarding a contract extension with point guard Rajon Rondo. Rumor has it that the five year deal will exceed the $55 million mark, making him one of the top 10 best paid NBA guards. Rondo and the Boston Celtics management agreed upon most of the terms of the contract last Sunday night, prompted by what the 23 year old player had been proving since his training camp begun this season. It was up to general manager Danny Ainge and owner Wyc Grousbeck to sign the player for another 5 years. They seemed a little hesitant about rehiring the player at first. All though he has been criticized for not really scoring much, or shooting much for that matter (he only attempted 23 shots in the first 4 games of the season) it is not his shooting average (a decent 57% field-goal average) nor his impressive rebound-assist numbers that were been questioned. Rather his leadership skills and the way he integrates with the rest of the team that had his bosses discussing whether to keep him or let him go as a restricted free agent. Bill Duffy, Rondo’s agent, agreed that the salary might have been higher had the player opted for a free agent negotiation with a different team. Yet, Rondo also realized that Boston has a championship-winning squad this season, and the temptation of taking another NBA title has its own very strong pull. Celtics head coach, Doc Rivers, expressed his happiness with the decision made by the board to keep Rondo around for another five seasons. He was also pleased that it was over with, so they did not have to keep talking about it anymore, and focus on what really matte: the season that is just starting. And what a way to start this has been. The Boston Celtics have proved to be one of the strongest teams in the league in the first weeks of the season. A more then respectable 5-0 streak leaves the team in the first place of the Atlantic Standings. Rondo is earning $2.3 million dollars this season, the last of his rookie contract. He averaged 11.9 points, 5.2 rebounds and 8.2 assists per game last season, but was able to bring the numbers to near triple-double in the playoffs with star forward Kevin Garnett by his side. So yeah, he has issues with scoring, but he has also proved a good distributor for the Boston Celtics, piling up his assists numbers in the games. All though having Kevin Garnett in the inside, and Ray Allen on the perimeter certainly help those high numbers. He has talent, that’s for sure. But he has also found some criticism from the specialized press, which finds him immature and cocky. He is athletic and plays real hard on defense, and with his fast long arms can get many steals and deflect the ball off trajectory. But that’s not all that count in the court. His last argument with New Orleans Hornets, Chris Paul, just did not help his case. Rondo’s attitude and comments toward Paul were so shabby and unprofessional, that Ray Allen, one of the classiest players in the NBA, allegedly apologized to Paul for Rondo’s foolish behavior. The season is still ahead for Rondo and the Celtics. Perhaps a little less talking and a bit more of scoring wouldn’t hurt his intentions of taking another championship. He has the team and the talent to do so. Throw in a little humbleness and maturity into the equation, and they might just do so.

Tennis ---Direction of Shot anticipation?

What's the best way to tell where your opponent will be going with their shot in tennis?

I am speaking of the way they approach hitting the ball. Are there any signs to look for? such as their shoulders, their feet, etc?

I am a relatively new player, but I think a lot of this has to do also with being able to recognize the next logical shot of your opponent (in other words, knowing tactics) and also placing yourself in a position on the court where you can get to it.

The best way would be to watch the way they set theirselves up-if you notice pros on t.v., you can tell they almost always go for the shot where there is space on the court. Notice their stances-whether they open themselves more to hit a down the line shot or if they rotate more to hit that cross-court forehand. for their serves, you have to learn how to find a pattern-maybe they like to hit their 1st serves wide and their 2nd down the middle. Other than that, id watch the serve right about when they hit the ball. Be on ur feet and notice how they pronate-this should tell you the direction of the ball. Notice their grip and how they hold their racket-this could give you a clue about how the spin and such should be on their next hit. If you really look at the pros on t.v., this should help you the most. Then apply some of the skills on the court. Afterall, practice makes perfect!
