CRAZY CRITTERS: Indestructible Dog Toy

Our Pets
We've got four four-legged children!  Three Maltese and one Australian Shepherd mix.  Three of the four are rescue dogs, so we're committed dog lovers.

Their Toys
Like any good parent, we've given them toys of every shape, size and material imaginable.  The Australian Shepherd doesn't like any kind of toy.  He only cares for the for things he can eat.  We've had the youngest Maltese for just over a year.  She was rescued from a puppy mill where she was one of the breeding females.  We think she's about five years old now, and we haven't been able to interest her in any toys except for a smaller version of the leather chews that the Shepherd likes.

The next oldest Maltese doesn't care for any toy but this raggedy, green vinyl "hamburger" (I think from Zanies) that is her constant play toy.  I've been all over the internet and can't find another, so we hope that it never wears out.  The eldest Maltese is a little over ten years old.  The only, and I mean only, toy she plays with is a "carrot man" we found at a pet supply store.  It's a furry, gold carrot, about six inches long with a squeaker.  Her life's goal is to see how many of these she can murder by tearing them apart and triumphantly pulling out the squeaker!  As I was picking up the stuffing from the death of the latest carrot man, I saw these Crazy Critters advertised on TV.

The Crazy Critter
Crazy Critters are stuffing free plush dog toys about 24 inches long.  One is a fox and the other is a raccoon. They lie flat on the floor so it's easy for the dog to pick up.  They have squeakers at each end, and are practically indestructible.  Probably one of these days they're going to quit making "carrot man", so this looked like it could be a substitute.  Besides, cleaning up the stuffing is a chore I can do without, and constantly replacing the carrot man is something that isn't in our budget.

Doggy Bliss
So, for $24, I ordered.  When they came in, we sort of snaked the fox across the floor in front of her.  At first, she just sort of cocked her head and processed the new fuzzy creature.  Then, she pounced...grabbed...shook it...and took it to her bed for the ritual gutting.  However, as hard as she tried, the Crazy Critter withstood the onslaught and remained intact.  Then, she discovered the squeakers, and was in heaven.  What's really neat is that the Maltese from the puppy mill has adopted the raccoon and carries it around like a trophy.  It's nice to see your kids having fun, especially when you don't have to clean up after them!

How can I encourage my dog to weave faster?

I practice with her at home, but she loses interest quickly. She'll be running and then she'll slow down to a fast paced walk for the weaves. I know she can do them faster with ease but she just isn't enthusiastic about them. If I run and play as soon as she finishes, it perks her up a little bit, but she soon loses interest in that, too. She'll also weave faster if I throw a toy, but I can't do that in a trial or my classes. I do that as much as I can, but she still slows way down for them when she knows I don't have a toy. Any tips?
I do run beside her. I also keep repeating "weave" and clapping. She loses interest in treats fairly quickly.

My dog does the same thing. Some things that I've found have improved his speed are to change up how you do the weave poles. Changing it up is also useful when in competition so no matter where you are your dog weaves. Try leaving your dog in a wait at the other end of the poles and go to the far end then tell your dog to weave. She hopefully will want to come to you and this will make her weave faster. You can get really excited at your end and she may think it is more fun. I know you won't usually be at that end in competition, but if you practice it quickly at the end, then you can start going beside the poles praising only when she is faster than the time before or when you see she is trying. I also practice staying at the starting end of the poles and having my dog weave away from me. This doesn't help with speed, but is a great sending practice.

Good luck!
