While it developed on college campuses in the 1950s and 1960s, beer pong has become increasingly popular off campus at parties and tailgate gatherings. While there is now an annual World Series of Beer Pong with specific tournament rules, most games are played according to house rules they vary minimally from region to region. Typically, the game begins with a six or ten cups of beer set up in a pyramid formation on both sides of a table. Teams of two players take turns throwing or bouncing balls into the opposition's cups. When a ball lands in a cup, a defending player has to drink the contents of the cup and remove the cup from the table. One tip is to coordinate a few "rapid fire", shots. The defending team is required to remove a cup when a ball lands in it. If the defenders are slow removing the "hit" cup, the shooting team has the opportunity to try to land their second shot in the same cup. If they land both balls in one cup, according to most players' rules, they automatically win and the opposing team must drink the remaining cups. Even if both balls don't land in the same cup, the rapid fire strategy can be a benefit by flustering the defenders and causing them to knock over other cups in their attempt to quickly remove the target cup. Another tip is to strategically use the bounce shot. Usually, beer pong rules allow defenders to actively deflect balls after they have made contact with the table, cups, or other surfaces in the playing area. Coordinating with your teammate to divide the defensive tasks can increase you effectiveness as a team and reduce the likelihood of sloppy play that could result in spilled cups and missed deflections. This strategy can be heightened by lulling your opponents into a false sense of security by feigning drunkenness.
A somewhat controversial strategy that requires careful execution is creative re-racking. Re-racking is the realignment of cups when holes are left in the formation after several cups have been removed from the table. Depending on house rules, there may be a set number of re-racks allowed to each team, or there might a set number based on the number of remaining cups. The trick is to re-rack cups slightly to the right or left of the original cup placement. This subtle and difficult to detect adjustment could be just enough to throw off the rhythm and accuracy of a particularly hot shooter.
In beer pong, distractions are an expected and accepted part of the game. There are many ways to try to distract an opposing player.
