First and foremost let us define what a forehand is. In the simplest terms, a forehand is any stroke hit by the dominant side of your body. If you are right-handed this would be anything to the right side of your body, and if left-handed anything to the left side. A forehand is one of the 2 ground strokes in tennis, the other being the backhand.

Traditionally the forehand was hit from what is referred to as a closed stance position, meaning that the toes of your feet were parallel to one another and pointed at the sideline as you hit. With modern racket technology players are now able to generate tremendous power and spin. Because of this, the closed stance has slowly morphed into the "modern", or open stance. In the modern open stance forehand the toes point at a ninety degree angle relative to one another, which ultimately allows greater body rotation through the shot.

The open-stance forehand affords both competitive and recreational players several important advantages. First, it allows the player to set-up quicker than the traditional closed-stance position. This is crucial since players of all levels are hitting with increased power and spin. The quicker you can "set-up", the easier it will be for you to handle shots hit with greater pace.

Secondly, the open stance forehand allows the player to coil his/her body weight and transfer that weight through the shot by rotating the hips and body. This motion was more difficult to accomplish with the closed stance because the front foot obstructed the hip rotation. You can illustrate this at home by putting your feet in the positions above and noting how far your hips can rotate. They are more restricted in the closed-stance position.

To review, the benefits of the open stance forehand allow you to:

(1) Set up quicker

(2) Handle opponents more powerful shots easier

(3) Improve coiling and uncoiling of body weight through the shot

(4) Increase stability

In order to help you accomplish the body and hip rotation you can use a very simple mental trick. Imagine that you have a large Texas belt buckle on. At the beginning of the swing the buckle points towards the side-line fence indicating that your body is coiled. Once the swing is finished your imaginary buckle should be pointed towards your opponent on the opposite end of the court.

The other beautiful thing about the open stance forehand is that it enables you to swing smoothly. Many beginners feel they have to swing hard at the ball to generate power. This could not be further from the truth! In fact, swinging faster and harder often results in more errors and can lead to injuries that can sideline your tennis career altogether. The open stance forehand, and the uncoiling motion of the hips, allows your body to generate the power, saving your arm. The result is a smooth controlled swing with sufficient power.

There are several common pitfalls that beginners fall into at this point. First, they do not "load" their weight on the back foot. This is crucial as the transfer of weight is what gives you strength and stability throughout the shot. Second, they load their weight, but stand up during the shot. I call this the "tooth-pick" leg phenomenon. The result is that their weight travels in an upward, rather than forward direction. This causes all of the potential energy stored in the form of weight on your back foot, to be converted to inefficient energy resulting in a "mushy shot" that often falls into the net.

To correct these common errors focus on staying low through the shot. Both knees should still be bent at the end of the swing with your weight shifting from the front to the forward foot. This will help get your weight "through the ball" resulting in a forehand that penetrates your opponents court with maximum power, spin, and control.

Now go out and use your new modern forehand to run your opponent around! It is a great shot that should be learned by every tennis player!

Black Holes are said to absorb even light, if so how come there are gamma ray bursts emmiting from the them?

I know that black holes absorb even light, if so then how are the recently discovered gamma ray bursts emmiting from them?
At first people thought that it was a very very large supernova, but if it was a supernova, than it would have been well beyond the boundaries set by the special relativity theory and thereby disproving it, so it was then thought to be emmiting from the black holes and they have been able to prove it too. so if black holes can absorb light, how are these gamma ray bursts being emmited from them?

Gamma rays are at the high end of the energy spectrum. On the event horizon, all mass is being collapsed on their way to the center of a black hole. This mass collapses into a very high density, such that frictional forces gives off energy in the form of gamma rays. These gamma rays interacting with other mass, ie Photoelectric effect, Compton scattering, and pair production allows some of this energy to escape the event horizon and radiate into space. Its comparable to heating water in teapot. The water being heated is like any mass being crushed near a black hole. So much energy is given off to surrounding matter, also being crushed, soon the energy becomes high enough to escape, like the steam in a teapot. At the atomic level, it looks more like a billiard shot when you break, all the balls scatter, some have enough energy to leave the table.
