Gauge Tennis String

You can change the performance of your racquet by choosing different strings, tensions and proper re-stringing. Are you looking for more power, less vibration or more "bite" on the ball? Give your racquet to a professional stringer, choose the right string at the proper tension and your racquet will perform to its best potential.

Finding the right string and tension takes a bit of work because there are a lot of variables to consider. There are many types of squash strings on the market and they differ in thickness (gauge), composition and construction. When choosing your string and tension you also need to consider the type of racquet you own and how often you are willing to restring it. Your style of play, skill level and personal preference for how the racquet should feel should also come into consideration.

One of the decisions you will have to make is the thickness or gauge of the string. Squash strings generally come in 17 gauge (1.16mm to 1.24mm) and a thinner 18 gauge (1.06mm to 1.16mm in diameter). All things being equal, thinner strings provide more power and thicker gauges can provide more control and durability.

The durability issue is easy to understand, but the other two may need some more explanation. Thinner strings stretch more and this "trampoline effect" is where power comes from. Thinner string equals more stretch and more power.

Thicker strings are generally stiffer (if they are of the same material and construction) and when you hit the ball, the "stringbed," remains flatter. It should be easier to control the direction of the ball when it's bouncing off this flatter surface, and that also applies to "cutting" the ball and the resulting amount of control.

To summarize, consider a 18 gauge when looking for more power and 17 gauge for more control and durability. Many squash players and racquet stringers have different opinions in regards to racquet string tension. String tight or string loose for power or control? According to various studies and manufacturers' information, string your racquet tighter to enhance control and string looser to increase power. How you use this information might vary from one player to the next, and there are always exceptions but the basic facts are: string tight for control, and loose for power. Strings that are strung tight are already stretched almost as far as they'll go. When the ball makes impact, they can't stretch a lot more, which means not much trampoline effect, but a nice, flat stringbed for good control. Strings that are strung loose stretch a good deal upon impact with the ball, so the result is lots of trampoline, but less control. Each racquet has a recommended tension range but generally you can choose anywhere from 20 to 40lbs. If you string tighter than that, you will risk string breakage and even racquet breakage. Below 20 lb., control becomes difficult because the strings move around a lot, and power begins to drop off as well. But within that 20-40 lb. range, you've got lots of room to find the ideal tension for your racquet and your game.

You can use string tension to emphasize your strengths, minimize your weaknesses, or strike a happy medium. Power players (people who are physically strong) generally don't feel they need more power, so they usually string up tight to enhance control. Players who are less powerful tend to go either way. Many of them also string tight for maximum control, while others string loose to put a bit more pace on the ball. It's a personal decision.

The string and the racquet have to work together, and a certain amount of trial and error is usually required to find the exact tension that works best for you and your particular racquet. Larger racquets, especially those with very long heads need slightly higher tension for comparable playability. You may also have to adjust tension based on the stiffness of the racquet itself. Some frames are very rigid (i.e., more control), while others are a bit "whippy" (i.e., more power). Don't be afraid to go up or down a couple of pounds when you restring, to find the ideal response.

Different stringing machines may produce very different results: for example, 30 lbs. on one machine may be equivalent to 25 lbs. on another. In order to get consistent results, find a stringer you like to work with and stay with him or her.

Strings lose tension naturally. Strings made from fibers like Zyex and natural gut hold tension better than nylon strings, and they also tend to be more resilient. Most lose roughly 10 percent of their tension within 24 hours of being strung. The more you play, the greater the loss of tension. When strings get looser because of tension loss, they become less powerful, not more, and they begin to lose their control properties. When your racquet no longer has that "zing," it's time for a new string job. Don't put it off.

Important racquetball accessories

What racquetball accessories are important for your game?

The first thing you need when you play racquetball is a racquet. After all, the racquet is your lifeline to the ball.

Choosing the perfect racquet might seem like it’s a simple task. But, in the last 25 years, technology has advanced so much that you will need professional advice to pick up the right racquet. Keep in mind, racquetball accessories become more vital to your game as you move up from intermediate to advanced levels.

When choosing racquets, be aware of the gauge of the strings in the racquet. Always choose high quality racquets. Good strings enable you to play your shots more effectively. The power you can generate from the racquet decides how well you hit the ball. Tight strings generate more power. The racquet itself may be made of aluminum, graphite, fiberglass or wood. The handle should not exceed 27 inches and the head has the distinctive teardrop shape.

Equally important racquetball accessories are the grips on the racquet. Typically, racquets have a super small or extra small grip. Small grips are preferred because they allow more control. Your glove size will help you decide the size of the grip. In any case, buying small is recommended even if you’re new to the game because you can always increase the size of the grip with tape, if you feel the need for it. Professionals generally prefer smooth replacement grips because this keeps the racquet secure and safe in the hand.

Grip enhancements help you keep a firm control on the racquetball. It is better to avoid flat grips. Instead, opt for an ergonomic design so that your hand feels comfortable and allows you to play a powerful, controlled and fluid game.

Balls are racquetball accessories that you cannot do without. Balls are typically made of rubber compounds and they are blue or green in color. Professional balls are faster and are most suitable for serious play. Don’t even think of coming to court with a single ball because a powerful shot can break the ball or rupture it. Bring a canister instead.

Racquetball accessories are incomplete without gloves. Though you are not required to wear these, gloves are good for the hand and they keep you playing for hours without your hand feeling the strain. Gloves with mesh or open holes are preferred because they keep the hand dry and cool. Leather, sheepskin and synthetic material are preferred because of the excellent grip they give.

When you choose racquetball accessories, you cannot leave out the shoes. A lot depends on what you’re wearing on your foot. Good sports shoes must provide good traction so that the player can move and stop at will. Choose soles made of gummy material, as these are breathable and strong.

Hybrid tennis strings? wiht blue gear?

I have blue gear 16 gauge and i am wondering what would be a good hybrid for it. The two i have in mind are Tecnifibre NRG2 SPL 18 gauge and Gamma TNT2 18 gauge. Also, what is a good tension for the combo and which one do i put for mains and crosses.

any other hybrid suggestions are helpful, but i would really like to keep blue gear in the hybrid.

i've heard great things about natural gut, but i've seen there a lil pricy, 50 for a set. Thanks everyone! =]

currently i'm strung with full blue gear 16 gauge at 61 cross and main on a babolat aero (non cortex)

i've also heard great things about technifibre strings.. so any suggestions???

also durability is not a problem with me, i've never broken my strings =], and i kinda want to, just to see what it feels like

I think the Technifibre NRG2 16 is better. It is more durable and has more spin potential. String the Blue gear at 60 pounds on the mains. String the Technifibre NRG2 at 62 pounds on crosses.

I was suspicious of the Smiley family as soon as I turned into the winding driveway of their secluded, historic seven-story Mohonk Mountain House in New Paltz, N.Y.
