The ruling body of the sport of figure skating is the ISU (International Skating Union) and was responsible for replacing the old 6.0 judging system that was in place through the 2002 Olympics. The need for a change in the scoring system was underlined during the 2002 Winter Olympics when it was discovered that the French Skating Federation had made a deal with the Russians, wherein the judges would give the French the gold medal in Ice Dancing, while the Russians would get the gold in Pair Skating. The scandal came to light when the Russians, Yelena Berezhnaya and Anton Sikharulidze were awarded the gold over their Canadian counterparts Jamie Salé and David Pelletier. You see, the Canadians skated perfectly in their long program while the Russians had made a glaring mistake that should have brought them in behind the French skaters. It was found that the French judge, Marie-Reine Le Gougne had given the Russians higher marks after submitting to pressure from the French Skating Federation and it was her vote that was the deciding factor. The final outcome amid all this scandal was that the judges and federation were disciplined harshly and that both the Russian and Canadian skaters were awarded gold medals. It did not seem fair to strip the medals from the Russians due to the judging scandal, nor did it seem fair to not award the Canadians who had skated so perfectly.
The old system of judging required the skaters be judged on technical merit in the free skate program, on required elements in the short program and on presentation in both programs. The marks awarded were between a 0.0 and 6.0 and were used to determine a preferential ranking for each judge. The judges' preferences were then combined, with the free skate program being weighted more heavily than the short program, and the lowest scoring skater(s), based on the total of the weighted placement, was then declared the winner.
The new scoring system, called either the ISU Judging System or Code of Points (CoP) or the International Judging System (IJS), is much different and is used to judge the figure skating prowess of both men's and ladies' singles skating, pair skating, synchronized skating and ice dancing and was first adopted in 2004 and made mandatory at all international competitions in 2006, which included the 2006 Winter Olympic games.
Under the new scoring system, technical marks are awarded for each individual skating element and each program is assigned a set number of elements. Then, each element is first judged by a technical specialist who uses instant replay video in order to verify the technical aspects that determine the execution of the different elements, like the exact foot position at the beginning and ending of a jump. The technical specialist's score determines the "base value" of the element. Simultaneously, twelve judges are awarding marks from -3 to +3 for the GOE (Grade of Execution), which is then translated into a value based on a table in the ISU rule book, under rule #322. To make it virtually impossible to "fix" the scoring, nine judges are randomly selected, the high and low value eliminated and then the average of the remaining seven scores is then added to or subtracted from the base value in order to come up with the value for the element. Deductions are given for falls, improper foot placement, lifts that go on for too long and for any other number of faults performed during the execution of the various elements.
The type and number of elements are determined by the event on the level of the competition and is completely defined in the ISU Rule Book. Following any event subject to the ISU rules, the complete judging scores are published in a document referred to as a protocol. A complex set of abbreviations and level numbers for each element are clearly spelled out and utilized. The marks formerly given for presentation are now replaced by five program components:
1. Skating skills (SS);
2. Transitions (TR);
3. Performance/Execution (PE);
4. Choreography (CH) and
5. Interpretation (IN) and are detailed under ISU rule 322.2.
The raw marks are awarded in increments of .25, ranging from 0 to 10 and then translated into a final mark for the program by multiplying by a factor that is predetermined by the program and the level.
You can see here that the scoring system has become so complex as to be so much 'gobble-d-gook' to those of us who are not immersed in the world of figure skating, but the coaches, skaters, commentators and judges are fully versed in how what rule applies when and how to score it.
It is true that figure skating is one of the most watched and appreciated competitions in the Winter Olympics. Their beauty, grace and athleticism are wonders to behold. Now you have a better idea of what it means to be a figure skater and how difficult it is to be deemed one of the best in the world. There is little room for error, or favoritism, now.
Along with watching figure skating, Joseph enjoys working in his flower and vegetable gardens. Garden Harvest Supply is one of his favorite gardening stores which offer tomato cages and many other types of plant supports.
Watch The Olympic Games On Satellite Tv
The modern Olympic games are the exciting arena for athletes from all over the world to come together and participate in the most intense competition in winter and summer sports. The Games have their roots in ancient Greece, where the pastime originated of marveling at impressive displays of athleticism. We now enjoy the Olympics every two years, alternating summer and winter sports, when people tune in from their homes to watch their countries' athletes in high definition.
The Olympics experienced a considerable hiatus after the 5th century AD but were revived in 1894 with the creation of the International Olympic Committee. The revival gained momentum in the 20th century and the Games have now become a significant world event. Most cultures around the world revere displays of athleticism that demonstrate great skill and difficulty. The top contenders of the various Olympic events are presumably the most talented in the world and have probably trained the better part of their lives to reach such a point.
During each Olympic year, the world flocks to the host city. Most host locations experience considerable revamping and growth in the years leading up to the games, preparing to house athletes and spectators from all over the world. But people from all parts of the globe are watching from home as well. Satellite TV has made it more convenient and accessible to tune in to the Olympics, that may be taking place in a different hemisphere, yet are still available in the comfort of your living room. It is also easier to tune in to the lesser-known events that typically don't draw as much attention.
Curling, performed atop ice with a disk and a long brush, is a curious sport that doesn't seem to require as much sweat and muscle as some others. Yet, cable television lets fans watch to their hearts content. Table tennis is an event that is perhaps less athletically demanding than swimming, and less popular as well. But there are various channels that are devoted to table tennis matches during the Summer Games, and the popularity of the event is rising with each year.
Many Olympic events are thrilling to witness, either in person or at home. Watching up close and personal in HD lets you see every last detail of the figure skating routines or the flipping and twisting gymnasts. You can see beads of sweat on the brows of short distance sprinters as they line up on the blocks and can almost feel the anticipation for the start gun to go off. The viewers can be the judges of the platform divers' entry into the water, cutting it like a knife with hardly any apparent splash. Each year the bar is raised as the athletic standards become more and more difficult. Luckily, we have the option of enjoying the impressive display from our homes, no matter where they take place in a given year.

Will English football learn a lesson from Team GBs sucess at the Olympic Games?
By investing in grassroots sports. Great Britain has produced a group of athletes that currently sit 3rd in the medals table behind only China and the USA, both of which probably have access to far more potential sports men and women than Great Britain has total population.
Will the FA pick up on this and start developing more and more youth football academies so that we can nurture whatever English footballing talent we have in our youngsters and one day fill the Premier league with English players rather than having it filled with foregn players and our national team a global laughing stock?
Or will the big-wigs at Soho Sq remain lodged up their own sphincters and continue to believe that the way forward is to play Lampard and Gerrard in the middle and Beckham out on the right?
