Serve spin is the direction a table tennis ball rotates upon being served. The ball can have top spin, back spin, side spin or no spin. Consistently achieving the desired spin is a vital skill for all table tennis players. The serve spin placed on the ball is what differentiates between serves.

The serving table tennis player has an advantage that the ability to produce consistent serve spin strengthens. There are four serves that should be mastered: the forehand topspin serve, the forehand backspin serve, the backhand topspin serve, and the backhand backspin serve.

The forehand topspin serve is often the opening serve as it is difficult for the opponent to play back aggressively. To achieve, stand at a 45 degree angle to the table with feet shoulder width apart and knees slightly bent. The ball is held in the flattened palm of the free hand at the edge of the table, the racket or paddle hand is slightly behind.

The ball is tossed relatively low and the racket is turned almost vertical as it is brought back. The paddle is moved upwards and forward as it contacts the ball. The entire upper body follows the shot through putting the player in proper position to play any return.

The forehand backspin serve provides variety for the opening serve and is still difficult to return aggressively. Begin with slightly bent knees at a 45 degree angle to the table. The torso is slightly bent forward, the ball is on flat palm of free hand and racket is slightly behind. The serving elbow is bent at 90 degrees.

The ball is tossed while the paddle is in mid back swing. A slight turn of the shoulders and the racket swings forward and down when hitting the ball. The upper body follows the shot through returning to ready position for a returned ball.

A backhand topspin serve provides a strong serve that is difficult to return. Stand almost square to the table with the dominant foot back slightly further; the right foot will be back if the player is right handed. Feet should be wider than shoulder width apart and knees are slightly bent. The ball is held in palm of free hand, above and behind the table. The hand with the racket is beside the free hand.

The ball is tossed up and the free hand drops to the side out of the way. The paddle is brought backwards in a position behind ball. The racket is tilted where the top is ahead of the bottom upon hitting the ball with a swing that is mainly forwards. The wrist should snap upon hitting the ball to provide optimal topspin.

The backhand backspin serve is aggressive and difficult to return. The feet are again square to the table with the dominant foot further back. The ball is held in palm of free hand with paddle held beside. The ball is held above and behind the table edge.

The ball is tossed up and the racket brought up behind. The free hand drops out of the way until after service. The player's wrist is cocked just before hitting the ball allowing the paddle to swing forward and downward upon contact. The upper body follow through will allow the player to return to ready position.

Each of these serves should be practiced until the player can hit a piece of paper on the opponent's side with 85% accuracy. Once this level is met the player can begin to vary the amount of spin placed on each serve.

So I was wondering which ping pong paddle is the best?

I want a comparison between pips out and pips in paddles? Pips out paddles seem like they would generate more spin then pips in paddles. Everyone I have talked to says Pips in paddles actually generate the most spin. I guess I would like to know if this is true and why this is.
