When to visit Rome

Apart from the absolute beauty of an artistic and monumental city as Rome, we can say it the tradition and folklore, such a popular mood, which makes an extraordinary charm to an urban landscape certainly unique.

1- To visit Rome during the Christmas Period
The Christmas holidays have their logical epicenter in the Basilica of St. Peter, for the solemn duties of the liturgy and the church of S. Maria in Aracoeli, where  the famous statue of the Infant Jesus decorated with precious stones and gold is the object of veneration.

Wonderful scenes of the nativity are in all the churches and even in special exhibitions held in the city. In recent years a nativity of monumental proportions is not only in the square S. Peter, but also on the steps of Trinita dei Monti and Piazza Navona. In Piazza Navona there are temporary shops (shelters) for street vendors who sell all items necessary to make the crib, the Christmas tree, toys and sweets.

On december the 23th it takes place an historic wholesale fish market (called "Cottio") within the old fish market at the portico of Ottavia. While at the stroke of the new year all the city of Rome islit by the "fireworks".

The prices for an accommodation during this period including apartments in Rome usually increase up to 50% respect to the standard. For this reason to save money and breathe anyway the atmosphere of the city a good alternative period to visit Rome could be 15-23 December (Prices for an apartment in Rome are even 30% below the standard).

2 - To Visit Rome on January the 6th

On January 6, Epiphany (Befana, in Roman slang) comes in the emblematic scenery of Piazza Navona still full of shops ("barracks") to the delight both young and old people.

3 - On 17 January, at the Basilica of S. Maria Maggiore was celebrated the ceremony of blessing the animals, now it has been relocated and is still being conducted at the portico of S. Eusebio in Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II.

4 - On 21 January St. Agnes in the basilica of the same name located there is another important ceremony, during which t two lambs are blesses whose wool will be used to make the "Palio that the the pope and archbishops will take over  during special liturgical ceremonies.

4 - On 2 February, the day of purification of the Virgin, is also the feast of Candlemas (blessing of the candles). In this day People wsih to see the sign that winter is passing ... even if with some doubts!

5 - For the day of the palms (One week before Easter) olive branches are distributed in all the churches of Rome. At Piazza S. Peter can be found a real palm tree  (an offer is required) according to a special privilege granted by the Pope

6 - Friday before Easter in Rome  there is the solemn via Crucis from the Colosseum to the Palatine, with the Pope, the event is broadcast worldwide.

7 - Easter is celebrated mainly in four major basilicas, according to ancient rituals, the Pope also gives the blessing "Urbi et Orbi" from S. Peter. IDuring this period on the table of a roman family is a must still to find a few typical dishes of Rome: sausage, pizza and eggs for breakfast in the morning, or cappelletti agnolotti in broth and lamb (along with everything else) for lunch.

Even during this period hotels or in general accommodations in Rome are very expensive. Again Holiday Apartments in Rome represent a good compromise in terms of location and budget. Notwithstanding this, prices are usually 30-40% higher as during Christmas period than the standard.

8 - On March 9 there is the celebration of St. Francesca Romana (familiarly called "Ceccolella" by his contemporaries). For the occasion, it is allowed to visit the rooms of the Noble Oblates of Tor de Specchi (Via del Teatro di Marcello), where the saint lived.

9 - On March 19 the religious festivities held in honor of St. Giuseppe mainly in Prati Trionfale district (see the central Districts of Rome), in the modern church dedicated to him. The secular aspect of the event consists of the famous "pancakes", offered by "fryers" Ther are busy frying pans in their colorful "shacks" and populating the streets of such district of Rome during the whole day.

10 - On 21 April we celebrate the Birth of Rome dated to 754-753 BC, although archaeological excavations in recent years have backdated this chronological limit until at least the tenth or eleventh century. Only public offices of Rome are closed during this day.

11- On April 25 falls on the other hand, as in all of Italy, the anniversary of Liberation (Second World War): special ceremonies are held at the Fosse Ardeatine, where 335 executed by Nazi reprisal lie.

12- April. Yet in April, the stone steps of the famous steps of Trinita dei Monti is overlapped by a cascade of azaleas: an unforgettable spectacle in Rome Piazza di Spagna.

13 - From late April to early May, in an incomparable setting of greenery and pine trees, is held in Piazza di Siena in Villa Borghese, the International Horse Show.
A few days later, at the Foro Italico, the International Tennis Championships. The Internazionali di Roma are becoming in the time a very important event not only for Tennis, but also for night life and shopping during the night at "Villaggio VIP".

14 - Between May and June there is every year a famous exhibition of roses in the rose garden of Rome: an exhibition and an international competition dedicated to new varieties of roses in the rose garden open to the public.

15 - On June 23 we celebrate the Nativity of St. Giovanni Battista, the saint is particularly dear to the Romans. In addition to religious ceremonies, there are other events related to the Saint animating through popular demonstrations the area of the Lateran Basilica since ancient times. During this period there is also the celebration of the summer solstice. On this occasion, the stalls invade the square in front of the basilica solding "bells" of clay, "garlic flowered" (against evil eye and witches) and it is possible to eat many snails in sauce (known as the "Roman snails"). Finally late in the night there are wonderful fireworks!

16 - On June 29 San Pietro e Paolo; another Roman holiday since  S. Peter is the great patron of the city, which also foresees a solemn procession (with the intervention of the Holy Father), from the Basilica of St. Giovanni in Laterano to S. Maria Maggiore.

17 - In mid-July, the feast of 'Noantri (the rest of us in Roman slang) at Trastevere district, with its fulcrum in the church of S. Crisogono and S. Agate.

18 - On August 5 he Madonna della Neve is celebrated in St. Maria Maggiore. It is said that the night between 4 and 5 August 352, the Virgin appeared in a dream to a patrician named John, pointing to the place where to rise a chapel dedicated to her. Even the Pope Liberio had the same dream and the next morning he found a miraculous snowfall that had surrounded the ground. The church was built and (actually improperly) had the attribute of "Liberian". Every year on this day, a fall of rain mixed with snow white flowers remember what happened.

19 - On 29 August the church of arciconfraternita di S. Giovanni Decollato opens to visitors; such institution has had for four centuries  the task to assist people sentenced to death. In this event you can access the cloister, the tombs, the historical room and interesting frescoes of the oratory.

20 - November the 2nd, All Souls' Day, special functions are held in some Roman churches, like St. Oration and Death Maria in Via Giulia. The protagonists are the cemeteries of the day.

21 - December the 2nd, the day of St. Bibiana (we recommend a visit to the church facade and statue by Bernini) gives to the people information about weather events: "if it rains in St. Bibiana day it will rain for 40 days and a week."
