If you were to ask our grandfathers for their opinion, they would confirm that the only way to a perfect shave is a wet shave. Unfortunately the art of wet shaving is getting lost in today's fast paced world. Replaced by throw away, battery or electrically operated shavers, few men seem to have to time for a wet shave.
Yet - we are still looking for the perfect shave. As razor manufacturers such as Gillette keep coming up with more blade shavers every time we see one of their commercials, it seems we are still not quite there yet. Further dermatologists are seeing more and more patients with facial skin reactions.
So, were our grandfathers right? I remember watching mine shave and frequently saying: "You need to know what you are doing. And, you need to have a good brush".
By using a shaving brush, facial hair becomes softer and the circular movements lifts them up evenly, allowing for a close, smooth shave without causing skin irritations or worse, cuts.
Nowadays there are endless possibilities for shaving brushes. They come with synthetic bristles or natural hair. Users are split on which ones are the best ones. Many men agree with my grandfather's choice. "Nothing beats a Badger hair shaving brush!"
Shaving brushes made from badger hair are the finest shaving brushes available, and not surprisingly also the most costly. In addition to a soft sensation on the skin, Badger hair shaving brushes are able to retain more water than for example synthetic brushes. This is important in creating creamy, thick and moist lather, which will prevent the razor from skipping.
Most experts distinguish between 3 types of badger brushes:
Pure Badger hair
Best Badger hair
Silvertip Badger hair
Pure Badger
About 60-70% of a badger's fur is made of this hair of which most of it is found on and around the underbelly. The softness varies and is not as long as some more expensive badger hair. This explains why pure badger shaving brushes are the least expensive of the three.
Best Badger
About 20% of the fur coat is made of best badger hair, which is longer and therefore softer than pure badger hair. The hair is also more pliable creating a smoother sensation on the skin. Compared to a pure badger brush, shaving brushes made from best badger hair will a) be smoother and b) paler in colour. Since the hair is thinner, more hair is used in creating a best badger shaving brush to increase the density.
Silvertip Badger
The most luxurious brushes are made from Silvertip badger hair, describing the look of this hair type. As you may have guessed by now, a badger doesn't have as much of this type of hair, which not only is the longest and softest, but therefore also the rarest hair on its back.
Luxurious doesn't always mean most practical however. These hairs are definitely the softest and most pliable but that results in less facial hair lifting action and almost no exfoliation. So like some luxurious cars, good for a Sunday shave but that's about it. Or maybe as a show off item to your friends. Just be careful not to fall for brushes that have bleached tops meant to make you believe you are holding a true silvertip in your hands.
So, in the end, if you want smooth but still practical, a best badger shaving brush is the way to go. You can find great prices online at places like Amazon, but if you want to actually 'feel' the difference, you will have to visit a store. Once you have picked your shaving brush and your soap or shaving cream, you have half the tools required for a perfect wet shave.

Can a gourmet coffee be too perfect? That's the criticism leveled at the coffees from Costa Rica – too much flavor, too balanced, too clean, and too smooth. Due to the many volcanic eruptions over the past millennia, the soil in Costa Rica is rich in many minerals and very fertile. This natural fertility contributes to the production of unique and exceptional coffee. Mission Grounds uses the finest shade grown top of the volcano coffee, the only pure number one select coffee. Our coffees stem from the jungles of Costa Rica. Costa Rican Coffees are known to be full-flavored, with lively acidity, and are very fragrant and tangy. It is the sole source of fine gourmet coffee and comes from a more delicate, higher-altitude tree and grows at a lower temperature than the Robusta bean. Single Origin Coffee: Estate or "varietal" coffees are unblended coffees grown on specific estates or farms in specific regions of Costa Rica. We must try to decide that future for ourselves. I earnestly wish an end would come to this bloody race I am to live with. Life is like a box of crap. It smells funny and looks like crap in a box.
Every now and then everybody is entitled to too much perfection. I hold my hands so tightly together that they begin to sweat. The skin cracks and peels at the centre of my palms. Two, tiny baby chickens crawl out from the opening and stand, still wet, in my hands. One of them is true love and the other is a big fancy car.
