Agility is not only about the ability to move. It is about fast movement of the whole body that allows you to respond quickly to a partner or a moving target, and thus, finding ways to improve your agility is not only vital in sports but also in overall health.
When it comes to sports, an improved agility means increased strength and range of motion. Agility is very important in multi-sprint sports like basketball and soccer. Keep in mind that different athletes have different ways to improve their agility in sports. For football players, they perform drills with tires; for martial artists, they do extending training drills.
Agility training is actually very useful for different athletes. A boxer needs to be as agile as he can to avoid the punches of his opponent and to land his own effective punches. Same is true for endurance athletes like marathon runners. A more agile runner is a faster runner.
One of the ways to improve your agility is through speed and agility drills. It starts with a thorough warm up and a typical session can include several sets of sprint repetitions. These drills are suitable for different sports but you can be more specific by adapting them to resemble the movement patterns you use in a specific game. One of the popular exercises being used in improving agility as well as speed is the ladder drills, where a ladder-like pattern is laid out on the ground and you can skip, hop, jump on the squares of the ladder, which can be done forwards, sideward or backwards.
Practicing balance and developing better coordination are also important in agility training. You can practice balance by doing the simple balancing exercise used by martial artists. For better coordination, play table tennis or tennis. These games are also great ways to improve your agility.
Running an obstacle course is also another form of exercise to improve agility. You can use household items like old tires and ropes in creating your own obstacle course in the backyard. You may also want to sign up for fitness boot camps where training is often done like those in an obstacle course.
Dancing can be an excellent exercise to improve agility as well, specifically hip-hop and ballet. But the perfect type is freestyle dancing. It improves agility when you incorporate several different moves.
Another way to improve your agility is through rope jumping drills. With these drills, you can perform speed rope, square rope and line rope jumping. A standard agility drill that is good for soccer and hockey players is the shuttle run. Dot drill is best for basketball players and skiers for making quick changes of landings and directions.
You can also include sprint training and plyometric agility hurdles in the list of exercises and ways to improve your agility. Forward-backward sprints are beneficial for athletes who need erratic speed and quickness. The agility hurdles are good not only in improving agility but also in improving coordination and building power and speed.

Competitive Athletes Developing a Competitive Edge Through Strength Training
Competitive athletes can improve their performance by focusing on the four conditioning goals of athleticism.
Athleticism is a general term used to describe exercises and games requiring physical skills. The components of athleticism can be broken down into four basic conditioning goals:
*Strength
*Power
*Speed
*Agility
As an athlete it is crucial to understand the importance of each, and how each component relates to the others. Having been involved as a competitive athlete and now an active coach for over four decades, I can see that each of these four basic components is essential to optimal performance on the field.
It has been said in training circles, that there are three topics which will spawn an instant debate. Politics, Religion, and Training techniques. American strength coaches and exercise researchers often work independently and often in direct competition with one another. There are different "camps" of training methods, each working in direct competition. I have witnessed extremely heated debates between coaches from differing camps. There are a number of Internet forums that are defenders of the ultimate training program. In the U.S., researchers seek publications and compete for grants, often keeping their data and ideas to themselves for fear that another lab will publish similar studies. There is often a sense of competition between coaches and researchers in the US rather than cooperation.
Watch an NFL football game, and then ask yourself some questions. Which team used only free weights? Which team used only machines? Which team followed training methods from the "HIT" camp? Which team used only Olympic- Lifts? Which team followed "Power lifting" protocols? Can you tell just by watching the game? Does it matter? What I see are individuals who display some great "athleticism". They obviously have trained the four basic components at some time during their athletic career. If competitive athletes want an extended professional career they better pay close attention to the components of "strength, power, speed, and agility.
So which training program do they use? Which one is the absolute best? What do you the aspiring athlete want to use? This is what I have learned after four decades of training. Are you ready for the best kept secret in the world of strength and conditioning? OK, here goes...THEY ALL WORK !!!! I know, "you can't handle the truth".
Why did the old USSR/Eastern Europeans dominate world arenas in Olympic sports, especially in strength-power type event? Because Soviet coaches worked together with the exercise scientists to field test and apply their theories. There was no "gap" between the scientists and the coaches as there is in America. In addition, the Soviets were firm believers in coaching athletes to learn basic movements prior to teaching them complicated sport-specific skills.
Competitive Athletes need to train for the big four: Strength, Power, Speed, and Agility. Master these areas and you will have an edge over your opponents.

What are some good excercises to build speed and agility for rugby?
I play varsity rugby so I do a lot of strength and endurance training. I've had a lot of injuries over the past few years that have really slowed me down, both north/south and laterally.
i would say any selfdefense is most of the time the best way. ur using not just part of ur body, and definitly trains ur reaction/reflexes..
start with tai-chi.
it will help getting ur "health" back and will give u some basic "feeling/knowledge" for martial-arts.
