Tennis balls are inflated, felt-covered rubber balls of approximately 2.7 inches diameter. The usual color of a tennis ball is yellow, although it may give the impression of being green due to its fluorescent nature.
History of Evolution of Tennis Balls
Earlier, tennis balls were made of a variety of material, such as:
- Leather and stuffed with hair or wool
- Stomach of a sheep or goat, wrapped with wool and tied with a rope
- Animal fur
- Pine wood
- Rope made from the intestines and muscles of animals
However, the modern tennis ball seems to have directly stemmed from those made in the 18th century. Strips of wool (3/4 inches in length) were tightly wound around a nucleus made of cork. Then a string was tied around that ball, after which the entire thing was covered and sewn with a white cloth. Tennis balls with a cork core and a cloth covering is still used in the original game of tennis, now known as, Real Tennis.
Modern tennis balls are made from vulcanized rubber (rubber cured with sulfur), a compound that is highly durable and strong, with the right consistency. The most expensive ingredient in a tennis ball is felt, which can be adjusted in different ways to alter of the ball's properties. Steaming the felt heightens the nap and makes the substance fluffier. This increases the ball's wind resistance and control, while reducing the bounce and speed. A compact nap causes a tennis ball to skip on striking the racket or hitting the ground.
Types of Tennis Balls
The two main type of tennis balls are:
- Pressurized - Such balls have a hollow core, filled with nitrogen. The pressure lasts for approximately a month, after which the ball becomes 'dead'.
- Pressureless - This type of tennis ball has a solid core and is suitable for those training themselves in the game. The ball does not lose its bounce easily. However, there are chances of the felt wearing off soon.
Some other kinds of tennis balls are:
- Regular duty tennis balls - These are meant for use in indoor and clay courts.
- Extra duty tennis balls - These must be used on grass and concrete tennis courts. If used on clay, the ball might get too fuzzy.
- High altitude tennis balls - These are used in high altitude regions, such as Denver, where the land is 4000 feet or more above the sea level. Regular balls have greater bounce at elevated levels.

4 Must Have Tennis Habits
There are several tennis habits that I feel are essential for any tennis player to develop into their game as soon as they can.
These are as much a mental skill as a physical one and is a habit that you need to develop asap.
So let's go over them one by one.
ONE BOUNCE
You should always attempt to play the tennis ball after the first bounce in practise (obviously not when volleying).
I see so many people letting the ball bounce twice if it's a bit short because they basically can't be bothered to move!
By only allowing yourself one bounce you will do several things -
. Improve your reaction in matches
. Stimulate quicker decision making for matches
. Replicates matchplay conditions (always vital for practise).
Get your head around it, start TODAY and you will really notice the difference in your game, which is really where it counts!
Here is the second habit I want you to get into your game as soon as you can.
COURT POSITION
Your court position is something most people never think about as a good habit to engrain into their "system" early on.
Never have your basic court position more than one metre behind the baseline.
Doing this will help you -
. Develop quick reactions
. Develop a quicker game
. Put opponent under pressure by returning the ball to them quicker
. Cut off any angles your opponent creates
Again, the sooner you get going with this the better - SO START TODAY!
BREATHING
Breathing habits are really important and again often overlooked by most people.
You need to start breathing out on every shot and take 2 to 3 deep breaths at the end of every point (even in practise).
The breathing out will help you to add more timing and power to your shots and the deep breathing will help you settle and re-group between points.
Don't forget because I will say it again, the sooner you start, the sooner all this will begin to feel natural.
So START TODAY!
This is the fourth and last habit I want you to get into your game right away.
AVOID THE NET
Try to hit the ball "long" rather than in the net when you are playing.
The sooner you see hitting the ball "long" as as a "better error" than hitting the ball into the net, the better.
Here is something you can take on the court and use that will help you play an error free practise or match.
See if you can go a whole game without an unforced error into the net!!!
If you can do that maybe you could try no error into the net in a whole set.
And maybe it might be possible to go a whole match without an error into the net.
The point is that even if you didn't go a whole match without hitting the ball into the net, you would surely be making a whole lot less errors in your game and that can only be a positive thing.
This approach -
. Improves your perception of depth
. Helps during matches as your natural inhibition kicks in, so that balls that are "long" in practise tend to drop shorter and therefore "in" during a match.
So there you have it, 4 good tennis habits to get into your game asap that will really make a diference as they get better and feel more natural.
They take practise but will be worth it in the long run!!

Where's the best place to buy tennis balls and equipment?
I'm getting into tennis and want to buy a crate of tennis balls and those things that pick them up. Where are places to buy them where they are priced well and good brand names? Thanks.
u could just go to d-i-c-k-s sporting goods ..they have hoppers for a min. of about $19 and you can buy a bucket of gamma balls for a fairly good price...but wherever you go, i wouldnt buy an unheard of brand of balls...i would stick with wilson, penn, prince, gamma, or brands like that.
Belgians resume rivalry at Wimbledon
Justine Henin and Kim Clijsters will face off again, this time in the fourth round at Wimbledon. Monday will mark the latest installment in a rivalry between the Belgian rivals, who both own Grand Slam titles, rose to the top, retired, and came back around the same time. Neither has won Wimbledon, and their head-to-head record stands at 12 wins each.
