Have your ever been asked, "What did you do today?" How did you respond? You probably wondered, Well, do you want to know every little detail, or just the tasks related to work?
Complicating matters is that some tasks, especially those related to work, naturally are more important and therefore tend to seem more relevant. Others--for example, surfing the 'net--are so common that they don't even register as a separate task. Those activities are just a part of living, you think.
Let's concentrate on leisurely activities for now. How do Americans spend their free time? A comprehensive review is way beyond the scope of this article--and, quite frankly, I can't afford to spend the time needed to develop the concept fully--but we can get a sense from one individual's research.
In the July 2004 issue of Focus on Culture, researcher Isme Alam reviewed some of the ways Americans spend their free time. Using data mostly from 2002, Alam found that:
- Radio listening dropped from 1997 to 2000, but was expected to rise by 2005. Television viewing increased during that same period, with viewers aged 65 and older watching more frequently than other groups.
- 46% of the respondents had read plays, poetry, short stories or novels in the previous year.
- 51% of U.S. households had a computer as of August 2000. That was up three percentage points from 1998 (and surely up further by now). 42% of households reported someone surfing the 'net in 2000. That was up from 26% in 1998, and most likely has increased since.
- 32% visited a historic park the previous year, and 33% stated they attended arts festivals and craft fairs. 17% said they attended at least one play the previous year. 4% went to the ballet, while 3% went to the opera.
Alam's research, though not comprehensive, provides a nice snapshot of how Americans spend their free time. (Alam also reviewed activities for Australians, Europeans, and his fellow Canadians.) This nation's interests are as varied as her people. And they are changing constantly. Note, for example, that television viewing increased toward the end of the previous decade. We know that network newscasts have suffered declines in viewership (coinciding, perhaps, with the rise in internet use). More people are getting their news and other information from phones and other gadgets. "American Idol" and "Lost" drew crowds, but it's uncertain whether their viewers will hang around once those shows leave the air.
What does the future hold? Marketers and manufacturers would like an answer to that question. Everyone knows that the internet has become a dominating force. The big question is: How do you reach Web surfers reliably and affordably? And, what about leisurely activities? It seems everyone is carrying a cell phone (and carrying on a conversation); many others are tuned to their iPods.
Our world is changing at what appears to be an ever-increasing speed. Staying on top of all this is no longer just a leisurely activity itself; it has now become a necessity.
As a child, Tom Fuszard many hours glued to the TV nearly every day. That has changed dramatically. While he still reads the local paper regularly, he gets most of his news online. During his free time Tom likes to read and play an occasional card game. His cell phone is off more than on, and he has yet to take the iPod plunge. Tom has blogged about one of his hobbies, amateur radio. You may contact Tom via tom@supremecom.biz.
More Commonly Asked Tennis Questions
There are so many rules in tennis that it can be tough to accurately determine who is at fault when certain situations come up. The more that you know about the sport, the better the chance you have at being able to avoid any controversy should one of the less-common situations in tennis come up.
Q: When can I call a foot foul on my opponent?
A: In a match that is not being judged by a referee, it can be difficult to determine whether or not you should call out a foot foul. Since tennis rules stipulate that the opponent should be given the benefit of the doubt in any controversial calls, foot fouls should only be called when every effort of informing the opponent about the practice has failed and the foot fouling continues to a flagrant degree.
Q: What mistakes result in a service fault?
A: Service faults can be caused by a number of factors. When a player makes a foot foul, doesn't serve from the proper area, or doesn't follow the proper form for preparing the serve, they are said to have a service fault. In addition, players that miss the ball whilst trying to serve are also said to have committed a service fault. If, after serving, the ball hits a permanent fixture of the court, such as the singles stick or the posts of the net before bouncing, a service fault is commited. Finally, when the ball touches the server or the server's partner, or any part of their clothing, before or after a serve, a service fault is said to have occurred. After the first service fault occurs, the server is expected to take their second serve without delay as to ensure that they are not simply buying time to rest.
Service should be performed by the serving party within 20 seconds, or they will incur a time violation.
Q: What determines a let?
A: A let occurs most often when, during service, the ball touches the net and lands on the opponent's side of the court. There are a few other situations that merit a let, including the unlikely situation in which the ball hits one of the receivers or an article of their clothing before bouncing. Also, if the ball is served before the receiver is ready, a let occurs. The service is considered to have never occurred, and it does not change the results of any prior faults on the part of the server.
